Survival and Self-sufficiency Tips

Test Gear In The Field

Discussions of what gear and equipment to include in a survival kit or bug-out bag are common among survival enthusiasts and preppers, and this topic is often seen in books, articles, blog posts and discussion forums. It’s natural for those interested in this subject to become fixated on the gear that they imagine will enable them to prevail in a difficult situation, and it’s true that the right equipment can go a long way in making certain tasks easier. Today’s technology can offer many advantages our primitive ancestors could not have imagined. But what our ancestors lacked in tools, they made up for in skills that were put into practice on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, many people today assume they can simply buy things to make up for these skills, and in doing so create for themselves an illusion of preparedness that they have never tested in the field.

Build A Root Cellar To Store VegetablesBuild A Root Cellar To Store Vegetables

I have found that for us to be self-sufficient we must be able to store vegetables and fruit in a cold storage or root cellar. The root cellar provides a safe, stable year-round storage facility for many different types of vegetables that we grow ourselves or would normally find at a farmers market in the fall.

Are You A Paranoid Prepper? Are You A Paranoid Prepper?

It’s amazing how many emails I get that start with either “I might be paranoid” or “My family thinks I’m paranoid.” The simple fact is, if you think that it’s smart to prepare for likely disasters, some people will call you prudent and others will call you paranoid.

The United States Department of Agriculture recently declared most of Oklahoma a disaster area. Seventy-four of the 77 counties in the Sooner State have been labeled disaster areas due to drought and wildfires, according to The Oklahoman.

Storing and using dried eggs and powdered milkStoring and using dried eggs and powdered milk

Fresh eggs and fresh dairy products are hard to store and highly perishable. My husband and I have chickens and gather fresh eggs every day. But what do you do if you don’t have chickens or a cow or a goat, and what if you live in an apartment or an area of the city where raising animals is prohibited?

Preparing For Life Without Doctors

In the event of a widespread breakdown of the system, getting proper medical care will prove difficult, if not impossible. With the system unable to guarantee proper care, it’s up to each individual to take the steps necessary to ensure adequate care for himself and his family. To do this, one should begin by creating a medical supply kit.

Survive The HeatSurvive The Heat

With heat advisories being issued across the United States, it’s important to be prepared in case a heat wave affects your area. Exposure to extreme heat can lead to illness or even death. Knowing the best ways to beat the heat is one of the most necessary survival skills, no matter where you live.

Setting Up A Food Storage PantrySetting Up A Food Storage Pantry

I strongly suggest you find a place in your home or on your property somewhere — either in a basement, spare bedroom, closet, junk room, under the stairway, heated garage, out building or root cellar — and turn it into your own home grocery store and pharmacy.

Defending Your LifeDefending Your Life

Sometimes, we are in danger because we are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Knowing what to do to avoid such a situation, or what you must do if you cannot, can be a lifesaver.

What Kind Of Seeds To Store? What Kind Of Seeds To Store?

Lots of people email and ask about what the best seeds are to store for long-term survival situations. With all of the deceptive and fear-based seed marketing in the preparedness market, it’s become confusing to try to figure out what kind of seeds to plant now and store for the future.

It’s Never Too Late To Be Prepared

How prepared are you? How long could you live away from your home? What if you were given 10 minutes to evacuate? Are you prepared to be without a grocery store and pharmacy for a few weeks? Would you have enough food and water to survive for a few days, even a few weeks, in the event it took this long to get help?

About Ask Marion

I am a babyboomer and empty nester who savors every moment of my past and believes that it is the responsibility of each of us in my generation and Americans in general to make sure that America is as good or even a better place for future generations as it was for us. So far... we haven't done very well!! Favorite Quotes: "The first 50 years are to build and acquire; the second 50 are to leave your legacy"; "Do something that scares you every day!"; "The journey in between what you once were and who you are becoming is where the dance of life really takes place". At age 62 I find myself fighting inoperable uterine Cancer and thanks to the man upstairs and the prayers from so many people including many of my readers from AskMarion and JustOneMorePet... I'm beating it. After losing our business because of the economy and factors related to the re-election of President Obama in 2012 followed by 16-mos of job hunting, my architect-trained husband is working as a trucker and has only been home approximately 5-days a month since I was diagnosed, which has made everything more difficult and often lonely... plus funds are tight. Our family medical deductible is 12K per year for two of us; thank you ObamaCare. But thanks to donations from so many of you, we are making ends meet as I go through treatment while taking care of my father-in-law who is suffering from late stage Alzheimer's and my mother-in-law who suffers from RA and onset dementia as well as hearing loss, for which there are no caretaker funds, as I continue the fight here online to inform and help restore our amazing country. And finally I need to thank a core group of family, friends, and readers... all at a distance, who check in with me regularly. Plus, I must thank my furkids who have not left my side through this fight. You can see them at JustOneMorePet.
